Local Exchange Trading Systems in Brussels

LETS

By action_for_sustainable_living

Local Exchange Trading Systems are non-profit community organizations which function around an alternative currency for exchanging all types of services.

One member earns credits by providing a service to another member of the community, he can then use these credits to pay for services from a third member. Any type of service or know-how can be exchanged thru the system: child care, cooking lessons, carpentry, gardening, dance lessons… you name it.

Several LET Systems are active in Brussels, they are called SEL (Système d’Echange Local  in French). BruSEL is their umbrella organization.

How it works

The local group maintains a database of available know-how and services from all members.

You get in touch directly with the service provider you’re interested in and pay him with your “chèque SEL”, which are then sent back to the central system for accounting.

The local system manages each member’s personal account of credits (credits are called BLE in Brussels).

How to get involved

To become a member, you must join an information session after which you can sign-up; check-out BruSEL’s agenda for the upcoming one. Membership costs only 10€ a year, to cover management fees.

Sel-lets coordinates SEL Systems in French speaking Belgium. They have a map of all local systems. You’ll also find contact details for your local system on BruSEL’s site.
